Michael C. Hall Teasers Season Premiere

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Comic-Con fans were treated to an early glimpse of Dexter’s heartbreaking Sept. 26 season premiere, which features the return of Julie Benz as the lifeless body of Dexter Morgan’s murdered wife, Rita. “It’s heavy,” Hall told TV Guide Magazine. “In the first episode, I think Dexter is in a state of suspended shock when he encounters his wife’s corpse. But after six years of playing a funeral director on Six Feet Under, it was fun for me to be on the other side of an intake meeting with a director who wasn’t played by me.”

Hall says he was respectful of Benz, who agreed to not only get back into the tub of blood for murder investigation scenes, but also climbed into a coffin for Rita’s funeral. “It’s a pretty creepy thing to get into a casket, especially when you’re having to act dead,” said Hall, recalling the episode’s director instructing Benz to “hold your breath” and not flicker her eyes. “Julie and I laughed about the absurdity of the situation, but we didn’t joke around about it too much. I wanted her to be able to get out of there as soon as she could.”

The premiere preview also offered teases of Dexter breaking the tragic news to Rita’s horrified children, Astor and Cody. “It’s pretty unbelievable what he and his kids have been saddled with,” said Hall. “At the end of the fourth season, the kids were off to Disneyland with the parent’s of Rita’s first husband, Paul, so they will be in the picture when the news comes of what’s happened.” Expect Astor to turn on her stepfather, whom she (rightly) blames for her mother’s slaughter.

One thing Hall says not to expect anytime soon: Dexter reentering the dating scene. “I don’t think Dexter’s looking for a new relationship or even to hook up,” Hall says. “His appetite is to behave compulsively in different ways.”

Michael C. Hall on ‘Dexter’s’ shades of gray

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

When Michael C. Hall took to the stage to accept a Golden Globe in January, it represented his first win after four nominations for his role as a serial killer on Showtime’s “Dexter.” Just a week earlier, with awards season then in full swing and his Globes appearance at the Beverly Hilton Hotel imminent, Hall was compelled to make a startling announcement: He was undergoing a battle with lymphoma. Though he joked backstage that the hat he wore to conceal the hair loss effects of his treatment gave him “a justifiable excuse for accessorizing,” he has kept his battle quiet. His wife and costar, Jennifer Carpenter, recently announced that the 39-year-old actor has “fully recovered.” In April, as “Dexter” began shooting its fifth season, which will begin airing in September, Hall shared his thoughts about America’s most lovable sociopath.

Why do you think Dexter as a character has connected with audiences, despite his objectionable actions?

I think audiences relish the opportunity to identify with these central, even glaring, flaws. I think all of us have a shadow that we carry around — whether it’s as formidable as one that inspires you to be a serial killer …. But I think there’s something on a metaphorical level that resonates with people.

Aside from the strict code that Dexter lives by, what else keeps him relatable either for you as an actor or for the audience?

For me, it’s always been about what separates him from the rest of the world that makes him interesting: He lacks authenticity. We all struggle with issues of our own relative authenticity or inauthenticity. We all know what it’s like to behave compulsively and just feel like we’re not really in a place of choice when it comes to certain behaviors. The fact that he does take responsibility for his affliction is something that I think is admirable in spite of how it manifests itself.

Exclusive: ‘Dexter’ collars ‘Southland’ cop Shawn Hatosy

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Shawn Hatosy is making a pit stop in Miami before returning to Southland: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Hatosy has booked a multi-episode arc on Dexter. A Showtime rep declined to divulge details on his character, but a recent Dexter casting call may offer a clue: The drama was seeking a thirtysomething actor to play the recurring role of a no-nonsense FBI agent.

After completing his Dexter arc, Hatosy will head immediately into production on Southland’s 10-episode third season.

This marks the second major piece of casting for Dexter’s upcoming fifth season. As I reported last month, »

Julia Stiles suddenly Showtime’s pick for Dexter?

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I’m woefully behind on Dexter, and now I have a major reason to catch up on the show because Julia Stiles is likely to be added to the cast of Dexter season 5.

Negotiations are still going on, but according to Michael Ausiello we should look forward to Julia Stiles in Dexter season 5. (Dexter is the hit Showtime series starring Michael C. Hall, for those who feel clueless right about now.) As for what Julia Stiles will do on the show, her role is rumored to be major. In fact, it is rumored that she might be the villain of the season. Last season the villain was the serial killer Arthur Mitchell aka Trinity, plaeyd by John Lithgow. (I know, I have GOT to go watch that season!)

Despite the fact that I haven’t seen the past season, I am pretty well spoiled about Dexter. Now that Rita is dead, Stiles could play a love interest (genuine or fake). I doubt Dexter would go for her, but you never know how these things will play out. It’ll be exciting when we know what role Stiles might be taking on in the series. Stay tuned to Small Screen Scoop for what little old ladies in beauty shops would refer to as “the dish.”

Julie Benz Returning to Dexter

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Julie Benz will return for the Season 5 premiere of Dexter, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

Is Dexter over Rita’s death? Not even close

Benz played Rita Bennett, the wife of serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), until the Season 4 finale, when she was murdered by the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow).

So how and/or why will she be back? “Bringing her back in a flashback or visionary way sort of steps on our use of Harry [James Remar],” says executive producer Sara Colleton, in a reference to Dexter’s dead father, who appears to his son periodically. “We want to be very, very specific about that and not get gimmicky, because it would become too much of a device.”

Showtime’s statement on Benz’s return hardly clarifies matters. “As Dexter grapples with the reality of the death of his wife and the realization that he is now a single father, the presence of Rita Bennett will help him deal with his newfound feelings of loss and grief — emotions that Dexter Morgan has never really felt before,” it reads.

Dexter Spoilers: Michael C. Hall Overcomes His Own Dark Passenger

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Good news, code-subscribing serial killer fans!  Michael C. Hall is back at work, although not Dexter just yet.  Hall is currently shooting the dramedy East Fifth Bliss and sporting a $10,000 wig, while waiting for his hair to grow back after beating Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Hall will return to the set of Dexter in June and the spoilers are starting to spill in regarding what we can expect in terms of a follow-up to last season’s amazingly dark finish.  For those of you not afraid to examine the season six’s bloodwork, read on!

  • What will become of the newly orphaned Cody and Astor?  Executive producer Sara Colleton said their Rita post-mortem plight will be examined closely next season.  “Cody and Astor are somewhat insulated from Dexter’s world, but it is something that is going to haunt Dexter…that’s a very provocative issue that we are going to explore,” said Colleton at last month’s Paley Fest. (Spoiler TV
  • Tired of the LaGuerta/Batista not-so-PDA?  Don’t worry, Lauren Valez thinks it’s over.  “[LaGuerta] is in love and she married him, but she’s never done this…Personally, I think she’s going to head for the hills. She’s worked so hard to obtain this position, but now it’s the battle: Do I hand this in for this guy, or do I hold on to everything I fought for?” says Valez. (TV Guide)
  • She’s gotten close before, so will Deb finally find out what’s up with Dexter’s nocturnal activities?  Executive producer Sara Colleton says not just yet.  “For right now, it’s run its course, we have to create a little bit of a safe haven before we pull the rug out on the poor boy.” (TV Guide)

3/8

  • Who will Dexter face?  Dexter himself.  Not that you could follow Lithgow’s Trinity, but the show’s creative team isn’t even going to try – and that’s a good thing.  Where Dexter has slowly mastered domestic life, now he will find himself as sole care-giver to three children.  Let’s see how the dark passenger handles all of that. (EW)
  • Dexter‘s story will pick up where season four left off and follow the dramatic leads left by Rita’s death.  So we will see Dexter planning and attending Rita’s funeral.  Will we see Julie Benz as a corpse? Heck, Harry appears in every episode – don’t rule out a visit from Rita. (EW)

Dexter will not be courting a replacement Rita.  That makes sense given the timeline but it is reassuring to know that the producers aren’t in a big hurry to have Dexter rebuild his life.  Instead, expect Dexter to spend a lot of time emoting over the fragments left behind. (EW)
